When preparing for a photoshoot, there are things you rely on your photographer for: directing, lighting, and composition. Most people think that they should be able to show up and let the magic happen. Right? Actually, no. Professional photoshoots for big-name brands like Victoria's Secret are staffed with an entourage of people who "make the magic happen." These are light engineers, fashion stylists, hair and makeup artist, photographers, and directors. It's truly an art to see these teams work their magic on the models for the perfect shot.
Now that you've decided to invest in a photoshoot, here are a few tips that I've picked up after years of working with brands. They will help you prepare like a pro so you can elevate the results of your photoshoot without needing to hire a glam squad.
Fail to plan and plan to forget something important
I am not going to lie. I have made do without many essential things; I've forgotten my makeup, brought the wrong underwear, and forgotten to shave. That is why I learned to prepare weeks in advance—starting with the look and concept.
Choosing the look for your photography session can make a big impact on the way the photos turn out. It can also be completely overwhelming. Start by building a mood board for your shoot. I love to use Pinterest for this. Consider what fits you well, what is available, and the message you want your photos to convey. Anything goes, but if you plan to use the images for years to come, choose classic styles and avoid trends.
Don't leave posing to chance. Some photographers are great at directing but take the initiative to look for inspiration and practice posing in the mirror. It's a good idea to have a few poses memorized, so you make the most out of your session.
The day before the photoshoot
This is a great time for a wax or a shave and a mani-pedi. Depending on the look, I suggest natural nails, french, neutrals, or classic red.
Iron and hang all of your outfits in an easily accessible place. I like to have anywhere from two to three outfits per shoot. Prepare your undergarments and make sure they fit well with your outfits.
Select one to three accessories to add a fun spin to your looks. Think scarves, sunglasses, and hats.
Wash your hair.
Get a good night's sleep.
The day of the photoshoot
If you are working with a makeup artist, your face should be bare, clean and moisturized. If you are doing your own, pack your touch-up makeup and a mirror.
When working with a hairstylist, make sure your hair is clean and dry.
Tight clothes can leave marks on the skin. Wear something loose and comfortable that will fit over your hair and makeup when it's time to change.
Pack your outfits and accessories
Don't forget to bring water.
Give yourself lots of time to arrive to the location, so you don't feel rushed
Relax and have fun!
