Key West Bae-cation Guide

Updated: Mar 1, 2023

If you live in SoFo chances are that already know that Key West is not a destination. It's a vibe. It's also the perfect laidback romantic getaway.

There is something special about driving over the seven-mile bridge, strolling with your significant other through the tropical courtyards and sharing some good Cuban coffee while listening to the roosters in the distance. We are lucky to live just a few hours away from the island and so we've been going there once a year for the last few years to disconnect and spend some bae-time.

Check out our favorite spots from this year's trip and take your bae on the most amazing getaway date.

Grab Breakfast at Cuban Coffee Queen:

Our first meal in Key West is typically grab-and-go. That's why Cuban Coffee Queen is our preferred breakfast spot. The coffee is smooth, and the breakfast sandwiches are delicious. You won't find omelets on the menu, but if you ask for a Key Westerner sandwich "without the bread," you'll end up with a pretty awesome breakfast of eggs, cheese, and shredded pork. There are three locations on the island. If you go to the waterfront spot don't forget to snap a picture by the Welcome Mural.

Enjoy the Gardens:

Wonder around town and take in the lush gardens bursting with tropical plants. Almost every house is surrounded by beautiful gardens and if you pay attention, you'll be able to see orchids mounted on many trees. If bae is a plant lover, visit the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory.

Visit Key West's First Legal Rum Distillery:

Stop by for a free sample or take one of their complimentary tours. The place is not big – which we found charming. During our tour, we noticed an employee sticking labels on bottles by hand. That is how we knew we were in a proper small batch distillery. During your visit, don't forget to ask about Spanish Marie Bad Bitch Rum. Named after a Rum Runner who smuggled high-proof rum from Cuba to Key West. No reservation is needed, so feel free to show up any time between noon and 5:00 pm.

SUP the Mangroves:

We want to give a shout-out to the Lazy Dog team for letting us drop our boards on their site. If you don't have a board, you can enjoy one of their eco tours and learn more about the local marine life paddling at a relaxing pace in the company of a guide. Otherwise, you can wander and enjoy the scenery as we did. During our paddle, we saw multiple sharks and tons of upside-down jellyfish. The last ones are easy to spot once you know what you are looking for.

Grab a Bite at Firefly:

The old house converted to a restaurant creates an intimate and romantic setting. Firefly is far enough from the main street to get away from the crowds but still within a walking distance. Surprisingly enough, they specialize in modern Southern cuisine which is. a nice break from the typical Key West restaurants. Make sure to grab a table on the upstairs balcony, overlooking the street.
